If you haven’t had the chance to watch Risen yet, you are missing out on a rare, high-quality Biblical epic. I was pleasantly surprised when I watched this film several weeks ago. Most of Hollywood’s attempts at Biblical filmmaking end up butchering the original story or producing gross doctrinal errors; on the other hand, many Biblical movies from the indie Christian market turn out cheesy or underproduced.
Risen falls into neither of these pits.
This movie delivers on a high-budget Hollywood experience, while still treating the story of Christ’s resurrection with astounding respect and accuracy. The acting is top-notch, and the story – which is told through the eyes of a Roman military tribune – provides a refreshing, original perspective on an oft-told narrative.
There is some violence and disturbing imagery, simply on account on the nature of the story, so I wouldn’t recommend it for young viewers. Otherwise, this film is a must-see for anyone interested in Biblical movies done right.

*This film has some violent and mature content, as I mentioned before, but none of it seemed inappropriate or offensive. Everything was tactful and necessary for telling the story. While I do not recommend this film for young or very sensitive viewers, I believe that the majority of viewers can watch this with a fully clean conscience.
